Finding a house for your rehearsal weekend

A rehearsal retreat venue is a house where a choir, orchestra or band rehearses, sleeps and eats for several days in one place: with a rehearsal hall that fits the ensemble, side rooms for sectionals, a piano in tune and beds for everyone under one roof. Such houses exist all over Europe, but they don't appear in any travel brochure. We help you find the right one.

Which houses work for rehearsal retreats

Four types of house cover almost every rehearsal weekend. They differ in rehearsal rooms, room standard, price and lead time.

What matters when choosing

The rehearsal hall

Rule of thumb: two to three square metres per person, plus ceiling height and a floor that doesn't swallow every note. A carpeted seminar room with a low ceiling is fine for a committee meeting, not for 50 singers. We ask for measurements and photos, not the house's own description.

Side rooms

Two to four smaller rooms for sectionals turn the weekend into intensive work instead of a permanent tutti. Orchestras also need space for percussion and double basses.

Instrument and tuning

A grand or upright in the hall, and in tune. This is the most frequently disappointed expectation. We ask for the date of the last tuning and tell you if the house gives no answer.

Everything under one roof

Beds, meals and rehearsal rooms in the same building save travel time and keep the group together. And: no more than one to two hours from home, otherwise travel time eats rehearsal time.

    Line-up and size, preferred dates or period, region, room wishes, budget range, whether you need a piano. Informally via the contact form.

  2. Receive houses with details

    We usually reply within two working days with suggestions: hall size, side rooms, instruments, beds, catering and price range, as far as known to us. Picked by hand, not generated automatically.

  3. Quote and booking with the house

    If a house fits, we put you in touch. Quote, deposit and rooming list you agree directly with the house; we stay available for questions.

Frequently asked questions about rehearsal retreats

What does a rehearsal weekend cost per person?

As a rule of thumb for two nights with full board in music academies, retreat centres and youth hostels in Germany and Austria: a low to mid three-figure amount in euros per person, depending on region, room standard and season. Room hire may come on top. Outside school holidays and during the week it is considerably cheaper.

How far ahead do we need to book a rehearsal venue?

Good houses are booked six to twelve months ahead for weekends, especially between January and April when many choirs rehearse for Easter and spring concerts. Weekdays and summer offer more short-notice availability.

Is there a piano at the rehearsal venue?

In music academies yes, usually several. Retreat centres and youth hostels often have an upright in the main hall, not always in tune. We ask about the instrument and the last tuning with every suggestion.

Can you find a house for a youth orchestra of 80?

Yes. For large groups, state music academies, youth hostels with a rehearsal hall and retreat centres with dormitory rooms come into question. What matters is a hall for the full ensemble and enough side rooms for sectionals.
