Festival participation

Find the right festival for your ensemble

Festival participation means performing as part of an event that invites ensembles by open call: choir festivals, wind band competitions, adjudicated events, orchestra meetings, but also town programmes, Christmas markets and spa concerts with open allocation. Stage, audience and setting come from the organiser, you bring the programme. The hard question is which festival fits your standard, line-up, destination and budget. We match your profile against open calls across Europe.

The formats and what they ask for

Experience values from practice. For every open call we state deadline, fee and degree of commitment as far as known, and say what we do not know.

What matters when choosing

Be honest about your standard

A competition with set pieces is a week of stress for a community choir, a festival with friendship concerts a weekend of joy. For a first tour a festival without a ranking is usually the better way in.

Read the package

Participation fee, obligation to stay in the festival hotel, number of performances, compulsory programme, degree of commitment. Some festivals mainly sell hotel nights. We tell you what is in the package.

The festival as anchor of a concert tour

A festival performance carries a whole trip: date, stage and audience are set, and around it a church concert and a joint concert with a local ensemble fit in. How that is planned is on the page Planning a concert tour.

The quiet open calls

Most performance opportunities appear in no calendar: spa administrations, market offices and parishes allocate slots on request. We know these routes from organising tours and ask them for you.

How you get matching open calls

  1. Describe your profile

Line-up, size, standard, repertoire, preferred region or country, dates, budget range, competition yes or no. Informally, via the contact form.

  2. Receive open calls

Usually within two working days you receive matching festivals, competitions and open allocations with deadline, fee, conditions and contact. Picked by hand. If a matching call comes in later, we get in touch.

  3. Apply and confirm

You send the application to the organiser yourself, with our note on what they value. For town programmes and spa concerts we put you in touch directly.

Frequently asked questions about festival participation

What does it cost to take part in a choir or music festival?

Anything from free festivals with an application, to participation fees per ensemble or per person, to competitions with an entry fee. As a rule of thumb, participation fees at amateur festivals in Europe are in the low to mid hundreds of euros per ensemble; festivals with an accommodation package cost considerably more.

How much lead time do festival open calls have?

As a rule of thumb, application deadlines close six to twelve months before the festival. Major competitions ask for recordings and applications a year in advance. Smaller festivals and town programmes allocate slots up to three months ahead.

What is the difference between a festival, a competition and an adjudicated event?

A festival offers performances without a ranking, often with friendship concerts. A competition assesses and ranks, with categories and set pieces. An adjudicated event assesses without ranking, common for wind bands and music societies.

Does concertbase also match performances at town festivals and Christmas markets?

Yes. Besides festivals and competitions we match your profile against calls from municipalities, market offices, spa administrations and concert series, see Performance opportunities.

Is the inquiry free of charge?

Yes, a simple inquiry is free and without obligation. Optional paid services will be added later; the simple inquiry stays free.
